Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana personally inspected Pag-asa Island on Friday.
Military officials joined Lorenzana in patrolling the island for government facilities that are to be built or repaired.
This is Lorenzana’s first visit to the disputed island, after he became secretary of National Defense.
According to Lorenzana, the government has already allocated funds to restore the runway and sewage system in Pag-asa Island. The restoration seeks to better the living conditions of the soldiers based on the island.
The Secretary also reiterated that President Rodrigo Duterte seeks to turn Pag-asa Island into a marine research facility, and tourist attraction.
The Pag-asa Island is part of the disputed Spratlys Islands that is being fought over by China and Philippines.
