A group of fish pen operators and trawlers trooped to the office of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources on Wednesday to condemn the latest decision of DENR Sec. Gina Lopez to remove all fish pens in Laguna lake.
According to Aurelio Santiago, leader of trawlers in Laguna Lake said that it felt that they were busted with the order of Lopez to rid-off the more than 100 hectares of Laguna lake of any form fishing.
Dr. Francisco Arcadia, one of the large scale fish pen operators, said that Lopez’ decision contradicts President Rodrigo Duterte’s wish to regulate fishing in the said lake against illegal fish pens and fish cages.
The two spokespersons said that more than 22 thousand fishermen and workers will be losing their jobs if Lopez’ plan pushes through.
