Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said that the Philippines remains true to his obligations under the US-PHL Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement.
Secretary Lorenzana said that the Duterte administration will respect the existing agreement which was signed by the former administration.
Lorenzana insisted that EDCA is important for the Philippines in order to combat terrorism in Mindanao and in keeping the peace in the West Philippine Sea.
However, Lorenzana said that there is no need to consult the US government regarding the Duterte administration’s next steps.
According to the DND Secretary, the status quo situation between the Philippines and China after the favorable decision of the Permanent Court of Arbitration over at the disputed territories at the West Philippine Sea will remain as is.
“No, we will not consult them with our actions but (our) actions will be guided by what is good for our country, we will (however) consult with our fellow claimants also, and the community of the ASEAN.”
