President Rodrigo Duterte’s first working visit to Moscow, Russia is scheduled from May 22 to May 26.
According to Department of Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary Maria Cleofe Natividad, the President will meet his idol Russian President Vladimir Putin this upcoming May 24 and 25.
The President’s visit is scheduled to coincide with the 40th Anniversary of Partnership between Russia and Philippines.
“This visit as a landmark that will set a strong message of the Philippines’ commitment to seek new partnerships and strengthen relations with non-traditional partners such as Russia. It is for this reason that the theme of the visit is building a stronger partnership, a new chapter in Philippines-Russia relations.” Natividad said regarding the visit of Duterte to Russia.
The two world leaders are expected to discuss the two nations’ cooperation against illegal drugs and terrorism.
Asec. Natividad said that Duterte will ask the help of Putin in order to strengthen the Philippines’ campaign to eradicate illegal drugs and terrorism in the country.
The two countries will also be signing bilateral agreements.
Other than economic and investment agreements, the two countries will also better their defense cooperation, which includes the procurement of weapons for the Armed Forces of the Philippines Modernization Program.
“These agreements are those related with defense, security, legal assistance, trade and investment, peaceful use of nuclear energy, and culture. The agreement on military technical cooperation will pave the way for the Philippines to explore the possibility of procurement from military procurement from Russia ” Natividad said during a press conference in Malacañang this May 19
Pres. Duterte will be meeting with the Filipino Community in Russia; 75% of which voted for him during the recent election.
